Getting Around Accrington by Taxi

Terraced streets in Accrington

Accrington is the main town in Hyndburn. It has the railway station, the town centre around Blackburn Road and Broadway, and a ring of smaller towns and villages that look to it for the shops, the trains and the appointments. Most journeys here are short. What makes them awkward is usually the timing, the hills or the weather rather than the distance.

This guide covers the journeys people in Accrington actually make, and where booking one of our Accrington taxis in the app saves the most hassle.

Accrington station

Accrington station sits on two lines. The East Lancashire line runs west through Church & Oswaldtwistle and Blackburn to Preston, and east through Huncoat, Burnley and Nelson to Colne. Trains on the Calder Valley route also stop here, running between Blackpool North and York by way of Blackburn, Hebden Bridge, Bradford and Leeds, and there is a direct service to Manchester Victoria.

So the trains themselves go most places. The awkward part is getting to and from the platform. An early start from Baxenden or Great Harwood, neither of which has had a station of its own for decades. A late arrival with a suitcase. A connection you are cutting fine.

Book the pickup in the app and track your driver in on the map, so you are not standing outside the house wondering. If you know which train you are coming back on, book the return at the same time. You can pre-book in the app up to twelve months ahead, so the late pickup is sorted before you have even left.

The town centre

Most of our Accrington pickups start or finish within a few streets of the town centre. Broadway and the bus station are the usual pickup points, and the Arndale, the town's shopping centre, is where a lot of the heavy-bag journeys home begin.

The Victorian market hall on Peel Street, a Grade II listed building that first opened in 1869, has been closed for refurbishment, with the traders selling from the Town Square in the meantime. When you are heading for the market hall, ask for a drop-off on Peel Street. It saves crossing Blackburn Road on foot.

Hospital and health appointments

Getting to an appointment is one of the most common reasons people book a car, and in Accrington it is also where the details have changed. Accrington Victoria Hospital's services were moved out in late 2024 because of the condition of the building. If you are working from memory of where things used to be, check your appointment letter for the building you are actually going to before you set the pickup.

Beyond the town, the two main hospitals for East Lancashire are Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and Burnley General Teaching Hospital. Both are a straightforward run from Accrington.

Appointments run late as often as they run early, so the simplest approach is to book your return in the app once you are done, rather than guessing a time in advance and then waiting around.

Up the hill: Haworth Art Gallery and Peel Park

Two of Accrington's best places to visit sit above the town centre, and both are easier with a lift up.

Haworth Art Gallery is home to the largest collection of Tiffany glass in Europe. It came to the town through Joseph Briggs, an Accrington man who went to New York and worked for Louis Comfort Tiffany, and it surprises plenty of people who have lived nearby for years. The gallery is uphill from the town centre, around five minutes by taxi from Broadway. Opening hours are limited, so check before you go.

Peel Park and the Coppice, on the eastern side of town, give you a view across Accrington and beyond from the top. The walk back down is fine. The walk up from the centre is steep enough that plenty of people book a cab to the park and walk home.

Late journeys home

Accrington does not stop at teatime, and neither do we. We run 24 hours a day, every day of the year, so a late shift finishing, a night out in town or a last train back all get the same service as a midday shopping trip.

Every driver is licensed, DBS-checked and vetted. Once your ride is booked you can follow your driver on the map, and share your trip live with someone at home so they know when to expect you. If there is a group of you, Ride XL takes up to six passengers, so nobody is left working out who goes in the second car.

Blackburn, Burnley and further afield

Accrington sits neatly between its two bigger neighbours. Blackburn town centre and Burnley town centre are each around a quarter of an hour away, and between them they cover the bigger shops, the hospitals and the nights out that Accrington people travel for. Oswaldtwistle and Church are a few minutes west, and Great Harwood around ten minutes to the north-west.

For flights, Manchester Airport is around 50 minutes away on the M65 and M66, and Leeds Bradford around 55 minutes via the M65 and A56. Our airport transfers page has the detail, and our guide to airport transfers from Lancashire covers the other airports in range. Book the outbound when you book the flight, and the return at the same time.

Match days

Accrington Stanley home games are their own kind of journey, with everyone trying to leave the ground at once. We have written a separate guide to Accrington Stanley match days by taxi, with the pickup advice for getting home after the final whistle.

The towns and villages around Accrington

Great Harwood, Clayton-le-Moors, Rishton and Baxenden each have their own pattern of journeys, from station runs to evening functions at the Dunkenhalgh. We have covered them one by one in our guide to Great Harwood, Rishton, Clayton and Baxenden.
